Adult Bibs: Let’s do away with this term

Categories :

Adult Bibs is a term that is widely in use. Should this term continue to be used? My answer is a resounding No! Bibs are used for infants and toddlers. Using the term Bib with an adult is demeaning and can reduce the sense of self worth of an individual who is already struggling with motor control issues.

For this Blog I decided to search the internet to see just how prevalent the term Adult Bibs is on popular websites. On Amazon I searched for Adult Clothing Protectors which I think is a much better term than Adult Bibs. Out of the first thirty product listings 29 of thirty had the term Adult Bib in their listing. Some of the listings also did contain the term Adult Clothing Protector.

On a rehabilitation equipment website: Performance Health I also searched under Adult Clothing Protectors. Two of the three products that came up used the term “Bib”. On Walmart.com I searched for Adult clothing protectors and the first ten product listings contained the term Adult Bibs …. I think because they have an entire category of “Adult Bibs”.

So in conclusion, the term Adult Bib or Adult Bibs is not a good one. Clothing Protector is a much better term. Individuals who are caring for people who need clothing protection during meals should take care not to use the term “Bib” to avoid embarrasment to the person using this type of adaptive equipment.

We are currently developing a new assistive eating aid which should dramatically reduce the need for clothing protectors. Please visit our ChillSpill page for more information.
