Update: 3-24 …. we have just launched a new website www.chillspill.net with more information about this new adaptive eating aid. In a previous Blog we advocated for not using the term adult bibs. This term can be demeaning and result in diminished self esteem for individuals who are experiencing motor control problems. A much better term to use instead of adult bibs is clothing protectors.

Adult bibs or clothing protectors also do not prevent spilling of food or offer a strategy that reduces tremor activity during plate to mouth movements. Food that is spilled on the table, the floor or the clothing protector is food that is not eaten. This may contribute to a nutritional deficit that is often associated with older individuals.

We are developing a new adaptive eating aid that will be available in early 2024 that eliminates the need for clothing protectors, retains any spilled food and provides a strategy for reducing tremors during plate to mouth movements.

ChillSpill provides a sloped surface that will retain any spilled food or route it back into the plate or bowl. ChillSpill is not intrusive and avoids the stigma of using a clothing protector.

In addition to preventing embarrasing spills, the sides of the ChillSpill can be used to support the hand during plate to mouth movements. This can result in reduced tremor activity.

Let’s see … improving self esteem, potentially improving nutritional intake, and reducing tremor activity at mealtime.
