Chill Spill: Adaptive Eating Aids for Parkinson’s

currently in development: anticipated to be available in summer 2023

This new eating aid for Parkinson’s will capture liquid or solid food that may fall from the user’s fork or spoon and returns it to the plate. Current strategies for dealing with spill from utensils at mealtime include using a bib or using weighted utensils. Wearing a bib can be a demeaning experience, particularly for an older adult. Weighted utensils may be worth a try and there is nothing to prevent them from being used in conjunction with the Chill Spill. Weighted utensils, while branded in the minds of many rehabilitation professionals have not been found to be of significant benefit when they have been compared to standard weight utensils in research studies. In a previous Blog: Weighted Utensils: Are They Effective? We reported on the results of several research studies that examined the effectiveness of weighted utensils. In another Blog we reviewed a research article that examined eating aids for Parkinson’s and for Essential Tremor.

In one of the studies the results indicated that the subjects had smoother movements when using lighter weight utensils! For this reason we do not have weighted utensils in our secure online Adaptive Eating Aids Shop. They may provide benefit to some individuals. however, and we are not against trying them!

The Chill Spill will be fabricated in the USA of food safe plastic. It will work with plates or bowls. For more information or updates on the launch date we invite you to contact us at your convenience.
